Update: Thornton dislocated his ankle on the play, team announced. He’s out there forever.
Tyquan Thornton made the biggest catch of the game for the Kansas City Chiefs against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 4, but unfortunately it ended with a gruesome injury that resulted in the wide receiver being carted off the field. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes found Thornton on a deep route late in the game with the Raiders up by two points, but after he bounced to celebrate his 55-yard reception, he crumpled to the ground. Players from both sides looked concerned as Thornton lay on the turf until a cart arrived to take him to the locker room.
The Chiefs would punch it in for Kenneth Walker’s go-ahead touchdown a few plays later. It must be very difficult to watch your teammate go down and then have to immediately move on to the next play. The Chiefs quickly scored again on another Walker touchdown to take control of the game late in the fourth quarter.
Thornton had five catches, 111 yards, and two touchdowns when he was injured. Thornton was truly having a breakout game only to suffer a devastating injury after the biggest catch of his career.
Here’s video of Thornton coming out on the field:
I hope Thornton is okay.
We’ll update this story as it develops.
