The Bears lost their key defender to a 2-game suspension

The Chicago Bears will be without one of their most important defenders for the next two games.

Bears edge rusher Montez Sweat received a two-game suspension Tuesday for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substance policy. He will miss games against the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots as a result of the suspension.

Sweat started all five games for the Bears this season and collected two sacks. He established himself as a key part of Chicago’s defense last season, when he recorded ten sacks in 17 games.

Sweat’s best overall season came in 2023, when he took 12.5 sacks while playing for the Bears and Washington Commanders.

There’s never a good time to lose a starter for two games, but it’s particularly tough for the Bears, who are coming off an ugly loss to the Green Bay Packers. They also had depth issues at the wing position this year, including one player retiring mid-season rather than staying with the team.
