Seahawks adjust playbook so Sam Darnold can make “quick decisions,” avoid turnovers

There are many things that go into winning and losing football games, but a quick glance at the Seahawks’ performance through the first five weeks of the season leads to an obvious conclusion about their results.

In their three wins, the Seahawks have turned the ball over twice but have turned it over seven times in their two losses. Four of those turnovers in losses were interceptions thrown by quarterback Sam Darnold β€” he has five overall β€” and cutting down on giveaways is at the top of Seattle’s to-do list heading into Thursday’s game against the Broncos.

On Tuesday, offensive coordinator Brian Fleury said he and Darnold are working to adapt their game plan so it emphasizes plays that allow Darnold to be comfortable and decisive on the field.

β€œIt depends more on the games that we have a lot of experience in both training camp and the first two weeks that he feels comfortable making quick decisions. and moving forward,” Fleury said, via the team’s website. “We’re leaning more in that direction.”

The Seahawks had chances to win both games they lost despite turnovers and those chances would have been better if they didn’t give the ball away, so focusing on cutting them down is a prudent response in the race for playoff positioning in the NFC that is already underway.
