NHL Scheduling Scenarios to Help Handicap in 2026-27 Season

NHL Scheduling Situations to Help Handicap in 2026-27 Season:

Without fail, in the week leading up to the opening of the NHL season for the last three years, I have received numerous requests to publish my article on NHL scheduling situations. Don’t worry, I never forget it, not since a certain VSiN pro subscriber declared a few years ago that it should be the “BIBLE” for anyone betting on hockey. While I wouldn’t say this is the end all be all for betting on every game, the systems described in the piece will certainly serve as a foundation for your daily routine.

Unfortunately, the only problem with this article, at this point anyway because we don’t have the VSIN NHL Analytics Report yet, is that you need to keep the main PDF link in this piece bookmarked, because you won’t get any reminders of the applicable games each day after that. Make sure you do that NOW. I also invite you to share systems updates in this article throughout the season in our new VSiN Community area on the website. That might help other bettors as well as yourself as you navigate the NHL season.

In most day-to-day sports, a team’s rest and its scheduling routines play a significant role in how well it plays each day. Naturally, the level of fatigue a team faces can have a significant impact on the level of effort it produces on the field, court, or, for the purposes of this article, the ice. I have made tracking these scheduling situations and comparing the two teams in any given hockey game an important part of my handicapping work. This has proven to be a very fruitful exercise over the past few seasons, as you’ll see below as I present six different NHL Scheduling Scenarios that produced specific results. I believe they all have a foundation in them as well, which I explained. As an added bonus, I’ll also show upcoming matchups where these scenarios will soon play out, so you can take advantage of them in the attached chart.

One more thing to note before I roll out the systems this year…the last two seasons have been unusually successful for such a high favorite. In the past, jacked-up prices on these teams, along with the more occasional upsets, have led to massive losses when backing these teams. However, over the last three NHL seasons, favorites of -270 or higher are 233-62 for +27.44 units, for an ROI of 9.3%. This is something to watch closely as the season resumes.

** Note that the games shown in the attachment cover the entire regular season as of Tuesday 9/29 – and will only be invalid in cases of postponements or rescheduling that affect each team’s rest situation

NHL Scheduling Scenario System #1

For the third season in a row in 2026-27, playing only one NHL home team going in rests more on a game-by-game basis in any given contest where the odds are so uneven. During these three years, this more rested home team posted a record of 679-474 for +53.68 units of profit (ROI 4.8%).

Steve’s thoughts: Sometimes the best way to win, or at least maintain in sports betting, is to keep the basics. Every NHL team has professional players, and while there are clear differences in talent throughout the ranks, collectively, when grouped across teams, they are not all that separate. They all face the same scheduling challenges: long road trips are difficult, too many games in a few days cause fatigue, etc. This system, which has evolved over the past three seasons, is easily the starting point for any bettor who wants to succeed in daily NHL betting. Taking the more rested home team in an uneven game-to-game schedule scenario gave bettors a 4.8% ROI profit using very simple logic.

NHL Scheduling Scenario System #2

NHL road teams playing in the standard one-day rest scenario have had three straight poor seasons when matched against a home team in the two-day rest scenario, going 151-214 for -60.6 units of loss (-16.6% ROI)

Steve’s thoughts: The one-day rest scenario is the most common scheduling scenario for NBA and NHL teams, so this system has produced a large number of plays here. This was the single most prolific angle I tracked last year in terms of negative ROI. Even a day’s reduction in rest proved to be a huge disadvantage for the road teams.

NHL Scheduling Scenario System #3

NHL home teams playing in a typical one-day rest scenario are 637-498 for +27.16 units of profit (2.4% ROI) over the past four seasons when matched against a road team not in that scenario.

Steve’s thoughts: While a four-year profit of +27.16 units and an ROI of 2.4% don’t break the betting numbers for these home teams, they are quite impressive when you consider the total losses of backers of the other hosts as a whole over that span, and this is a 4-year running trend with multiple games counted in the sample. Again, the one-day rest scenario is the most common scheduling scenario, so players get comfortable with their preparation routine. In very specific house advantage situations, this is the one to watch out for. This is a good one to keep the bettors afloat for the long haul.

NHL Scheduling Scenario System #4

Any NHL team playing on 3+ days rest against an opponent on a shorter rest has been very successful over the last two seasons, going 127-90 for +25.65 units of revenue (11.8% ROI)

Steve’s thoughts: This system has been generated 217 times in the past two seasons, so bettors should watch out for teams that are very well rested, because they play with a huge advantage when fighting against teams that are less fortunate in the schedule. When I talk about the importance of rest, few prove it better than this angle.

NHL Scheduling Scenario System #5

NHL road teams had a nice advantage last year in the limited number of games where they had a two-day or more rest advantage over the host team, going 111-89 for +14.79 units of revenue (+7.4% ROI) over the last four seasons.

Steve’s thoughts: A two-day layoff is a lot for a home team to overcome, so this turns out to be one of the few simple scheduling scenarios where the road team has had a consistent advantage over four years. It doesn’t take much reasoning to figure out why. Road team well-rested, home team not. The price of the home team is still average as if the home ice is the deciding factor. It is not.

NHL Scheduling Scenario System #6

NHL road teams playing back-to-back road games struggled again in 2025-26, and are now 180-287 for -81.25 units of loss (-17.4% ROI), regardless of the home team’s scenario over the past three seasons.

Steve’s thoughts: This is the opposite of #5, and if there is any toughest spot in either NBA or NHL scheduling, it has to be the back-to-back road game scenario. You have to be very picky about taking a chance on these road teams that fight the fatigue factor, as they win less than 39% of the time.

Summary

These scheduling systems show that NHL betting isn’t just about picking the better team in a matchup. The rigors of playing an 84-game season in a variety of scheduling situations takes its toll. It is therefore important to recognize not only a team’s strengths, but also how rest or fatigue may affect their physical and/or mental readiness for any given tournament. Starting with this basic understanding will help you teach more NHL handicapping winners.
