The full range of moves the Giants made Tuesday made their point clear. They can no longer justify giving up a roster spot to veteran receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
Beckham is gone, and receivers Braxton Berrios and Charlie Jones join the 53-man roster. It’s simple; Berrios and Jones play special teams. Beckham is not.
And it’s not a simple shuffle between the roster and the practice squad. Via ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, the Giants was unexpected to sign Beckham to the practice squad “at this time.”
The Beckham reunion gave the Giants a great story, one that fans embraced. Since then reality has settled. With starting quarterback Jaxson Dart out to a knee injury, the Giants need to get the most out of every player on the team. Beckham didn’t do enough. It was time for him to go.
Whether he ends up elsewhere remains to be seen. Other teams, like the Rams and 49ers, have needs. More damage is inevitable.
Last year, Beckham did not play. It remains to be seen if that will be the case for the balance of 2026.
