49ers news: SF released Matt Judon from practice squad after 12 days

The 49ers released veteran DE Matt Judon from their practice squad ahead of the Week 5 matchup against the Seahawks.

The San Francisco 49ers on Saturday released veteran defensive end Matt Judon from their practice squad. The move allows San Francisco to return Ogbo Okoronkwo to its practice squad while the team’s defensive line gets reinforcements.

Judon joined the 49ers’ practice squad in late September. He was elevated to the active roster for San Francisco’s Week 4 matchup against the Denver Broncos, where he recorded one tackle in 14 defensive snaps.

The 34-year-old defensive end was brought in to provide depth amid injuries along the 49ers’ defensive front. However, the team’s personnel situation changed after Mykel Williams returned from the reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Williams was activated on Saturday following a productive week of practice. To make room for his return, San Francisco released Okoronkwo from its active roster on Friday before returning him to the practice squad and holding him up for Sunday’s game. With Okoronkwo returning to the setup, Judon became the player the 49ers switched to.

Judon entered the 2025 season as a free agent in January after being released by the Buffalo Bills. He then remained unsigned until San Francisco added him. Last season, he appeared in 14 games for both teams.

For the 49ers’ Week 5 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, the team’s available defensive line options include Williams, Keion White, Osa Odighizuwa, Gracen Halton, Okoronkwo, Romello Height, Sebastian Valdez and Khalid Kareem.
