Troy Aikman says it’s “unfair” for him to back Jerry Jones “into a corner”

ESPN’s Troy Aikman has had a lot to say recently about his uncertain professional future. On Thursday, he admitted he may have said too much.

By Brandon Contes of Terrible AnnouncementAikman expressed some regret during a show Thursday on 96.7 The Ticket in Dallas about comments about potentially working for the Cowboys.

“The last thing that I want is — I was answering a question, and I think Jerry is really unfair that he has to answer these questions,” Aikman said. “As far as, ‘Hey, are you going to bring Troy back, or are you going to have a role for him?’ I mean there’s really no good answer he can give.”

Aikman said he raised the issue with Jones in Philadelphia on Monday night, where Aikman called the game between the Eagles and the Cowboys.

“We talked about it for a while because I felt like maybe I backed him into a corner he didn’t deserve to be backed into,” Aikman said. “He didn’t ask for it. And so, it’s clear to us. He totally understands, and yet, he’s very complimentary if something like that happens with the idea that we don’t have conversations right now.”

Aikman is in an awkward place himself. He feels ESPN doesn’t want to bring him back next year. He cut his chances of getting TV work next year to “50-50.” Part of his own personal coping mechanism seems to be dealing with the fact that he can feel his 25-year broadcasting career running through his fingers.

Aikman now realizes, at recently talked about possibly working for the Cowboyshe created a scenario in which Jones would be asked about Aikman possibly working for the Cowboys. Which happened on Tuesdayas Jones does his own two radio spots per week on 105.3 The Fan.

However, Aikman’s latest comments are all part of a dance aimed at potentially laying the groundwork for Aikman, who has been and by all indications still works for the Dolphins, to potentially join forces with Jerry in an effort to finally put together a team that could possibly return to the NFC Championship, for the first time since 1995.
