Some owners are spending big on midterm elections

With all the talk about donkeys and advertisements, it’s easy to forget that a pretty important election is coming up in six days.

Many NFL owners know.

The people in Sports in the Front Office have compiled a list of donations made by people holding roles in pro football franchises, based on data from the Federal Election Commission.

The total is more than $18 million, with nearly half of that amount coming from one person. Rob Walton of the Broncos gave $8.95 million, mainly to Republican candidates and political action committees.

New Seahawks owner Vinod Kholsa gave $2.09 million, mainly to Democratic causes. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones donated $1.81 million, mainly to Republican causes. Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam gave $1.56 million, mainly to Republican causes. No owner gave more than $1 million.

Of the top 12 owners who wrote checks to candidates, 10 of them gave primarily to Republican candidates and PACs. That makes sense. More than anything else, wealthy people tend to favor a political philosophy based on lower taxes.
