Seahawks Musings: Seattle practices self-flagellation, pulls clear of 49ers in NFC West

The 2026 Seattle Seahawks are not a great team. At this point last season, neither did the 2025 Seattle Seahawks. The 32-29 loss to the San Francisco 49ers had a similar feel to last Week 5’s 38-35 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Seattle once again lost a game they should have won, besieged by turnovers on offense. They had a chance to win at the end, but couldn’t close the deal. Just like last season, this loss drops the Seahawks to 3-2 with both teams having early season home losses against the Niners.

Seattle went on a big run after Week 5 last season, going 14-1 the rest of the year. As much as I’d like the Seahawks to do that again, it’s highly unrealistic. Point blank, they need to play better on offense. The score made it look like the defense was cut short, but anyone who watched it knew they played really well. Offensive turnovers put them in a hole. Three TD drives totaling less than 30 yards will be tough to overcome. Settling for 5 FG is usually a recipe for failure. Even one more TD on any of those drives would have completely changed the game. You can wish with one hand and throw with the other…see which one gets filled first.

This game was a particular brand of frustrating Seahawks football. On the one hand, they play like garbage and are likely to explode. On the other hand, they were in a position to win the game and in my opinion the better team. I see nothing about the 49ers that screams NFL Superpower. If the Seahawks hadn’t stepped on their own garbage, they probably would have won that game by double digits.

As it is, they didn’t win the game and are now further behind the 49ers in the NFC West. Seattle needs to get their heads out of there—if they have any chance of being competitive in the NFC this year.
