Miami Dolphins news roundup: Week 7 roster moves including addition of Zane Gonzalez, cut Storm Duck

Tuesday was a busy day for the Miami Dolphins, with the front office making several roster moves. The Dolphins traded kickers on Tuesday, bringing back Zane Gonzalez and running back Riley Patterson. Patterson is 7-for-0 on field goals this season and 5-for-6 on extra point attempts. After connecting on 93.1 percent of his field goal attempts, including 3-of-4 from over 50 yards, last year, Patterson’s accuracy seems to have dipped this year, but a bigger issue seems to be on kickoffs.

“We tried to get them out of the end zone; that was talked about and it just wasn’t executed the way we wanted it to be… yeah, some of them should have been touchbacks and weren’t,” head coach Jeff Hafley explained Monday when asked about special teams issues and the lack of simply kicking the ball for touchbacks rather than relying on the coverage unit.

The Dolphins held tryouts for kickers on Tuesday, including former seven-time Pro Bowl selection Justin Tucker, and ultimately brought back Gonzalez. The Cleveland Browns’ 2017 seventh-round draft pick, Gonzalez went on injured reserve during the preseason with Miami this past summer. He was released with an injury settlement and is now back with the Dolphins, signed to the practice squad.

Miami is not done with their roster moves yet. They also promoted rookie edge rusher Rodney McGraw from the practice squad and waived edge rusher Andre Jones Jr. The possible surprise move of the day came with the news that the Dolphins were waiving cornerback Storm Duck.

A 2024 undrafted free agent from Louisville, Duck is on the physically unable to perform list this year as he recovers from a knee injury suffered last year. He returned to practice three weeks ago, and the team has until now to decide whether to add him to the active 53-man roster or keep him on PUP for the rest of the year. Instead, Miami moved on from the Duck.
