Joey Porter Jr.’s back is “feeling better,” and hopes to play on Sunday

The Cowboys’ injury report was unchanged Thursday. The only thing that changed was the trade for cornerback Joey Porter Jr., who was not listed in the report.

That’s news in itself from the report as Porter practices after passing his physical.

The Steelers ruled Porter out for Thursday night’s game against the Browns, adding his on-again, off-again back issue to Wednesday’s injury report.

To no surprise, Porter said his back “feels better” after the trade with the Cowboys.

He is expected to make his 2026 debut Sunday when the Cowboys play the Texans.

“We’re just trying to pick things up every day“Porter said after his first practice in Dallas, via Todd Archer of ESPN, “and if everything looks good, we should be out there.”

Porter’s addition gives the team depth at the position, with cornerbacks Shavon Revel (right knee/right ankle) and Cobie Durant (hamstring) still out.

Porter didn’t get the contract extension he wanted in Pittsburgh and is stuck, an inactive through the first three games. He will play in Dallas in the final year of his deal, because, he said, the Cowboys showed him “value” which the Steelers did not.

“I think he’s excited for the opportunity to play, but we’ll see how the rest of the week goes,” Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said, via Joseph Hoyt of Dallas Morning News. “It’s a good start today.”

Porter said he got what he wanted going to the Cowboys and now wants to finish his career in Dallas.

“I’m down with it if they are. I want to finish my career here,” Porter said. “So hopefully I’ll just perform like how I know how to perform and do what I do, and I’ll let everyone else take care of it.”

Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (hamstring) also missed practice for a second straight day, and safety Malik Hooker (fractured forearm) was again limited after returning to practice Wednesday.

Outside linebacker James Houston (shoulder) remained a full participant.
