The Cowboys ran all over the Eagles on Monday night, and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio pointed himself.
The Philadelphia Eagles defense had no answer for the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football, and Vic Fangio wasn’t pointing fingers at anyone but himself.
Speaking to reporters a few days after Philadelphia’s 38-21 loss to Dallas at Lincoln Financial Field, the Eagles defensive coordinator owned up to his unit’s struggles.
“I didn’t do a good enough job coaching,” Fangio said, via Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
It was a tough night for a defense that has become one of the league’s most respected under Fangio, who helped lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl title in his first season with the team in 2024. The Cowboys ran all over Philadelphia, piling up 204 rushing yards on 38 carries. Javonte Williams did most of the damage with a career-high 155 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, becoming Dallas’ first 150-yard rusher since Ezekiel Elliott in 2018.
The Eagles also failed to record a tackle for loss.
Dak Prescott also took advantage of the wind. The Cowboys quarterback completed 15 of 27 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. CeeDee Lamb caught two of those scores, while George Pickens hauled in the other.
The game was close most of the night, featuring six lead changes. Philadelphia opened the second half with an 84-yard touchdown drive to go up 21-20, but Dallas answered with 18 unanswered points. Prescott’s third touchdown pass put the Cowboys ahead, Brandon Aubrey added a field goal, and Williams sealed it with a 2-yard touchdown run with 2:21 left after a DeMarvion Overshown interception.
The Eagles are short-handed on both sides of the ball. Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks were all out, forcing Tanner McKee into the starting role, and Saquon Barkley left the game with a back injury.
However, Fangio put the defense’s performance on his own. His charge comes at a difficult time for Philadelphia, which has now dropped five straight games to fall to 2-5 on the season.
The Eagles will look to snap their skid and right the ship defensively when they host the NFC East-leading New York Giants next week. Fangio and his unit will need a better showing to avoid losing Philadelphia’s season.
