Last week, the Detroit Lions got the worst possible result in literally every single Week 4 game, including their gut-punching loss to the Carolina Panthers.
This week is off to a much better start, as the Cowboys losing to the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers was definitely the preferred result on Thursday night.
But what other results will benefit the Lions this week? Let’s take a look at our Week 5 Detroit Lions rooting guide.
Game in London — Eagles (2-2) vs. Jaguars (3-1
This game is almost over by the time this article is published, so let’s hope the Jaguars (an AFC team) beat the troubled Eagles.
Bears (3-1) and Packers (2-2)
Root for: Uhh.. Packers, I guess?
Personally, I think Chicago is the best team in the division, so let’s give them as many losses as possible. I think the Packers are the worst team in the division, but are generally a well-run organization, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they turn things around—especially after making some moves on the offensive line. However, don’t root for the Packers, just root against the Bears.
Vikings (4-0) and Saints (1-3)
It’s easy. The Lions are now two games behind the Vikings in the division. The loss gives the Lions a chance to get into first place.
Giants (3-1) and Commanders (1-3)
I don’t particularly fear any team in the NFC East right now, but might as well give the current division leader an L.
49ers (4-0) at Seahawks (3-1)
It’s another toss up. One of these teams will be a heavy player in the NFC Wild Card race, so Detroit benefits for them to argue with each other as much as possible. You can certainly make the argument for the 49ers to just run away with the division and sweep everyone else in the NFC West, so if that’s your reasoning, go for it.
“Sunday Night Football”
Ravens (3-1) and Falcons (2-2)
The Falcons suddenly have life after a terrible start to the season. Coming off back-to-back blowout wins, they could be a surprise playoff contender. If the Ravens beat them, however, that balloon will deflate a bit.
“Monday Night Football”
Bills (3-1) and Rams (2-2)
A Buffalo win would both make the Lions’ loss to them look more reasonable and sink the “superteam” Rams to a five-game losing streak—and they’re lucky they’re not 1-3 after last week’s lucky fourth quarter comeback.
