Chiefs WR Rashee Rice files for bankruptcy

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has filed for bankruptcy in a move related to a 2024 car crash he was involved in.

Rice filed for bankruptcy in bankruptcy court in the Northern District of Texas and claimed more than $3.45 million in debts, according to ESPN’s Nate Taylor and Michael Rothstein. According to the filing, he owes more than $2.1 million to plaintiffs who are in the process of suing him over the crash.

Rice claimed to have $677,054 in assets in the filing, including $421,825 in “deferred compensation.” Among his listed assets is his Super Bowl LVIII ring, valued at $160,000.

Much of this stems from Rice’s involvement in a hit-and-run case in Texas that took place in 2024. He initially faced eight felony charges in the incident, but later accepted a plea deal. He still faces civil lawsuits from multiple victims, and he was suspended six games by the NFL for his role in the crash to begin the 2025 campaign. ESPN scribes also noted that Rice is being sued by “an ex-boyfriend who claims he assaulted her repeatedly from 2023 to 2025.”

Rice has 20 catches for 243 yards and two touchdowns in five games this season. He is currently in the final year of a four-year, $6.5 million rookie deal he received when he was drafted in 2023.
