Tom Pelissero of the Ringer broke the news that the New York Giants are trading for Minnesota Vikings backup JJ McCarthy.
Reports surfaced Sunday that the Giants were interested in San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones, but there were three other quarterbacks: McCarthy, Jones, Jimmy Garoppolo, Justin Fields, and Gardner Minshew.

Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy had a chance to select Jones in 2021 while coaching the Chicago Bears, but passed. He passed on Jones again, this time for another first-rounder who shouldn’t have been picked that high to begin with.
The Giants gave up a fifth-round pick for McCarthy, who was drafted in 2024. We won’t know what the 49ers were asking for Jones when he was on the hypothetical trade block last year, but we may find out if there are any more QB-needy teams in the next month and a half.
It will likely take a positional damage, or turn out a team that is not a contender. Until then, Jones remains on the 49ers’ roster.
