After opening the 2026 season with a dominating win over the Tennessee Titans, the New York Jets have lost two straight games in heartbreaking fashion. A week ago the Jets dominated the Green Bay Packers for most of the game. They led by double digits early in the fourth quarter before imploding and letting the game slip away in overtime.
On Sunday the Jets suffered another devastating loss. After trailing for most of the game against the Detroit Lions, the Jets rallied to tie the game at 24 on a spectacular Garrett Wilson touchdown catch with just over four minutes left in regulation. Unfortunately, the Lions rallied, regaining the lead at 31 – 24 with less than two minutes to play. The Jets had a drive left in them, advancing inside the Lions’ 30-yard line before Geno Smith was sacked by former Jet Chuck Clark on a blitz. The Lions recover the fumble, the Jets are out of timeout, and that’s the ball game.
The second straight devastating loss gave the Jets a 1-2 record to start the season. Now the Jets go on the road to take on the Chicago Bears next Sunday. Like the Jets, the Bears won their first game and lost their second this season. They will play their third game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football this week.
The Bears suffered a costly injury to their starting quarterback Caleb Williams last week. Without Williams the offense has struggled mightily, putting up just three points in a 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings last week. Tyson Bagent came in for Williams and was ineffective. If Williams stays against the Jets that will greatly improve the Jets’ chances of getting back on the winning track next week.
