3 Numbers to Know From the Jaguars’ Win over the Eagles in NFL Week 5

The Jacksonville Jaguars swept the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 5 to move to 4-1 on the season.

Here are some statistics that stand out in the achievement.

That’s Jacksonville’s odds of winning with eight seconds left in the game, per NFL Pro.

Jake Elliott just completed a 48-yard field goal to put the Eagles up by one point. If the Jaguars had a timeout left, they might have gotten a piece of completion before stopping the clock and attempting a long walk-off field goal.

But the Jaguars didn’t have any timeouts, and the Eagles made sure they had less time by punting into the endzone to avoid a touchback.

Then Ameer Abdullah happened.

“Man, we got the perfect call with the perfect kick,” Abdullah said. “We knew we could hit them in the lanes — that’s what Josh Cameron called early in the game — so we knew if we got the right kick, we had a chance.

“And having a kicker like Cam Little, we know, if we get anywhere near midfield, come down and let him handle the job.”

Boy, did Little handle it.

It’s easy to say that the Jaguars should have lost this game. They dig their own graves. Long snapper Ross Matiscik and left tackle Anton Harrison exited midway through the game, contributing to questionable coaching decisions and frustrating player mistakes. I don’t know about you all, but I felt like messing with my hair the entire second half.

That was one of the craziest, dumbest, wildest football games these eyes have ever seen. I suppose that will be the case even if Little’s last kick goes through the uprights. But because his 57-yarder did in fact win the game, it makes it one of the most dramatic victories in franchise history.

“Man, deciding on this team is special,” Abdullah said. “I’ve never played on a team like this, that ‘it’s not over until it’s over.’ These people fight against poverty. We started slow, another big penalty game, we were shooting ourselves in the foot, but it seemed like the guys were getting stronger and stronger with every rep.

“That alone shows me the determination and the toughness and the experience these guys have gone through being down, being up, and understanding it’s all the same.”

It’s been years since an NFL team won consecutive games with 13+ penalties per game.

The Jaguars are the first team to do so since the Seahawks in Weeks 10 and 11 of the 2011 season, according to NFL Pro.

“Every time we’ve been positive, we’ve been negative,” describes Liam Coen. “Like, every time we got an 8-to-10-yard run, we got a penalty. That means we had 13 [penalties] again, for 100 [penalty yards]. And they all seem to want good games.”

“We had them in how many 3rd-and-XLs defensively and let them off the hook? So I never really felt like we were just getting flat-out outplayed. Like it just never felt that way. We were kicking ourselves in the foot—we were 0 for 3 in the red area—and how many of those were inside the 5? Right, so you’re, what can’t be scoring position.”

“To come out on top, obviously—you always want to live in the process. You’re so wrapped up in the results. But, to have a second and the team is still fighting and the team is still going through it, I mean, I have to be proud of that.”

That’s how many snaps DaVon Hamilton played at long snapper on Sunday, per PFF. 4 snaps as a field goal long snapper, 4 snaps as a punt long snapper.

Hamilton is a nose tackle.

He was thrust into emergency action following the aforementioned injury to Matiscik. It’s not ideal to lose a player with that particular skill set, but Hamilton has shown in the past that he’s up to the job.

There are understandable concerns. Jacksonville was more aggressive than usual on 4th down, and Little missed a final extra point that likely would have led to overtime.

But you have to give credit where credit is due. D-Ham stepped up to help steal the win on Little’s last kick.

  • 5: International career wins by Trevor Lawrence, breaking a tie with Tom Brady (4) for the most in NFL history.
  • 45: Rushing yards allowed by Jacksonville over the past two weeks (22 in Week 4, 23 in Week 5). The Jaguars are one of seven teams during the Super Bowl to allow 25 or fewer rushing yards in consecutive games.
  • 1: Other teams during the Super Bowl that didn’t allow an individual rusher to reach 40+ yards in their first five games of a season. That team was the 1969 Dallas Cowboys.
  • 11: Consecutive games Jacksonville has held opponents to under 20 points. This is a franchise record and the NFL’s longest active streak.
  • 5: Consecutive games Bhayshul Tuten has rushed for 65+ yards. He is the third Jaguar to do so, joining Fred Taylor (2003) and Maurice Jones-Drew (2011).
  • 22: Bhayshul Tuten’s carries on Sunday, the most of his career. He has 13+ carries per game this season after seeing double-digit carries just once last season.
  • 5: Career field goals of 55+ yards for Cam Little, the most in franchise history.
