Vic Fangio: JJ McCarthy was a “steal” for the Giants

In late September, the Vikings sent quarterback JJ McCarthy — the tenth overall pick in the 2024 draft — to the Giants for just a fifth-round pick. And the Eagles, trying to end a six-game losing streak, will have to face McCarthy on Sunday.

On Tuesday, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio addressed the various changes the Giants made from last season, capped by his appearance with the Giants landing McCarthy to replace Jaxson Dart, who is out for the year with a knee injury suffered in Week 2.

“They have a really good offense,” Fangio told reporters. “They have talent at the receiver position. They did a good job of attacking the Ravens, just not for John. [Harbaugh]but for [tight end Isaiah] Probably and [fullback Patrick] Ricard. They have a lot of the type of Ravens offense that they had when [New York Giants senior offensive assistant] Greg [Roman] was there, and they mixed the kind of Kansas City that went through there [offensive coordinator] Matt [Nagy]. They have done it now. They have a good wideout, a good tight end, two good backs. The quarterback has come in, for a short time and really done a good job, for them to get him for a sixth-round pick is a steal.

This is a fifth-round pick, not a sixth-round. But it’s still a steal.

The Giants are desperate for quarterback help. The Vikings are, apparently, desperate to unload McCarthy. Desperate enough to take a fifth-round pick, even though the Vikings will likely need him to play at some point this season.

The result is that the tables have quickly turned, and the Giants are now the top dog while the Eagles are currently alone in one of the weakest divisions in football. And the idea that the Eagles beating the Giants in Philadelphia would be viewed as an upset says it all.
