A look at Jacoby Brissett’s trade marks for the Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals as they shape up their quarterback room.
The Baltimore Ravens need a reliable solution at quarterback, and the Arizona Cardinals have a veteran they’ve already moved into their plans. Their reported trade of Jacoby Brissett addresses both scenarios, although the undisclosed compensation precludes a complete verdict.
Both teams get tentative B+ grades for football logic. The final price may change those assessments.
Ravens trade grade — B+
At 4-4, Baltimore still has a season worth protecting. With Lamar Jackson’s thumb injury and Tyler Huntley’s toe injury, the Ravens are looking for stability at their most important position.
Brissett offers experience that an emergency signing or an untested rookie can’t immediately replicate. He also worked with Ravens quarterbacks coach Israel Woolfork in Arizona, giving him a familiar instructor during a difficult midseason transition.
His current production calls for realistic expectations. Brissett threw for 1,719 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions before being cut by Arizona. The Ravens are getting a functional starting option, not a guaranteed playoff rescue.
Timing limits immediate benefits. Rookie Joe Fagnano remains Thursday’s projected starter, with Brissett positioned to help afterward. Baltimore deserves credit for addressing its injuries, provided the final cost reflects its limitations.
Cardinals trade grade — B+
Arizona has made its quarterback decision. Coach Mike LaFleur named Gardner Minshew the starter and rookie Carson Beck the backup Monday, moving Brissett to third-string emergency duties.
Trading him follows that plan. Keeping a veteran on an expiring contract in that role would offer insurance, but moving him creates an opportunity to recoup value from a player the Cardinals no longer intend to start.
That’s sound management, although to call it pure profit would be overstating the case. Arizona has already invested in Brissett, and the financial consequences and compensation are important when evaluating the transaction.
Arizona will also give up experienced depth. Minshew’s comeback performance against the Dallas Cowboys earned him the job, but it doesn’t guarantee consistent production. Beck remains a developmental option rather than a proven replacement.
The Cardinals get a tentative B+ for aligning their roster in their new direction, while the Ravens receive the same grade for addressing an immediate need. The undisclosed compensation will ultimately determine how well each team does.
