The Colts made a surprising decision regarding RB Jonathan Taylor

The Indianapolis Colts has opened the door to trade star running back Jonathan Taylorwith active discussions already underway with multiple teams, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

The Denver BroncosGreen Bay PackersMinnesota VikingsNew York Giantsand Seattle Seahawks all have expressed an interest in acquiring the 27-year-old.

Colts owner and CEO Carlie Irsay-Gordon met with Taylor this week for an in-depth conversation about their respective futures. Schefter indicated that Irsay-Gordon has a relationship with the three-time Pro Bowler and would prefer that he remain a part of the organization’s rebuild. At the same time, the Colts recognize the draft capital that Taylor can generate.

Indianapolis is seeking a compensation package similar to the one the San Francisco 49ers sent the Carolina Panthers for Christian McCaffrey in 2022, which includes second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-round picks.

Taylor’s contract increases his appeal to hiring teams: He is owed $15 million in 2027 and $9.46 million in 2028 after receiving a $15 million signing bonus before the season.

The Colts have already shown a willingness to trade established players for future assets. They recently struck a deal with Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson and Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner for a 2027 third-round pick, a 2027 fourth-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick.

The organization has also held discussions involving wide receiver Josh Downswhich it valued at a third-round selection, although both Taylor and Downs are expected to play Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Head coach Shane Steichen addressed the recent transactions in a team meeting, stressing the realities of NFL business while urging professionalism. Taylor, for his part, said Thursday that he has not requested a trade and remains proud to wear the horseshoe. He acknowledged the possibility of a move, noting that the players understand the business side of the league.

Taylor enters the weekend as the second-leading rusher in Colts history with 8,185 yards, trailing only Edgerrin James. He also holds the franchise record with 77 rushing touchdowns.

This season, Taylor has rushed for 587 yards and is tied for the NFL lead with eight scores.
