After missing Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders with a calf injury he suffered in practice last week, Seattle Seahawks safety Julian Love appears to be trending toward a potential return in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
According to head coach Mike Macdonald, Love underwent extensive workup Monday morning that yielded positive results. However, his status for training this week remains unclear.
“As far as Julian goes, it’s a day-to-day thing now,” Macdonald said at Monday’s press conference. “We’ll see how it progresses. He did some extensive work this morning and it went well. We’ll see how it translates on Wednesday and move forward.”
If he remains sidelined against Los Angeles, Rodney Thomas II and AJ Finley will likely continue. Both opened the season on Seattle’s practice squad but were signed to the active roster following multiple injuries to start the season.
Although he was active in the first two games, Finley did not see the field but was asked to play against Washington without love. However, he struggled in coverage, was the closest defender to Treylon Burks’ first half touchdown and was flagged for a costly penalty in the fourth quarter that led to a go-ahead field goal.
With fellow safety Ty Okada (hamstring) sidelined and no update on a possible return date, Love’s return will certainly provide a big boost to Seattle’s shorthanded secondary, which looked like a shell of itself in Week 3.
More information about Love’s status should be available Wednesday night when the Seahawks release their first injury report of the week.
