New York Giants at Houston Texans – 1:00 pm ET
JJ McCarthy will start for New York after showing some major signs of life in the second half of last week’s loss to New Orleans. However, that was a Saints defense that ranked 23rd in the NFL in Dropback EPA/Play Allowed (-0.003), and New Orleans didn’t give it their all in that game after opening a 24-point lead. McCarthy will be up against an entirely different beast as he plays a great defense in Houston — and does it on the road. Considering how much the Giants struggle to run the ball, this looks like one where the Texans defense could completely dominate.
I also like the look of CJ Stroud and the Houston passing game. Stroud currently has the fifth-highest Pro Football Focus grade (85.7) in the league, and New York’s passing defense isn’t exactly reliable.
It’s also hard not to expect an impressive effort from the Texans. Under DeMeco Ryans, Houston is 5-0 both straight-up and against the spread after playing back-to-back division games, and the team is also 9-1 SU and 7-2-1 ATS after allowing 30 or more points in the previous game.
Bet: Texans -9.5 (-122)
Cleveland Browns at Tennessee Titans – 1:00 pm ET
I’m a little nervous about how much I like this one. I fully understand that things are never as easy as they seem, and this could be a game where Cleveland is a very popular side. However, I have such a big gap between these teams that I have to play it aggressively.
The Browns aren’t a great offensive team, but their -0.077 EPA/Play is better than the Titans’ -0.133. Then, the main difference between the two is on the defensive side of the ball. Cleveland is just outside the Top 10 in EPA/Play Allowed (-0.030), while Tennessee is 23rd with an EPA/Play Allowed of 0.026.
Cleveland is playing better on both sides of the ball, the team has a more experienced quarterback, and the group has more to play for as it currently sits in a three-way tie atop the AFC North standings.
I’ll also add that the Titans had a weird situation with Jordan Elliott this week, and that could serve as a distraction. And I’m not sure Robert Saleh knows how to deal with distractions, because he’s bad enough without them. In his coaching career, his teams are 5-13 as home underdogs of 7 or fewer points. That includes an 0-3 mark this season.
Bet: Browns ML (-120 – 2 units)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Carolina Panthers – 1:00 pm ET
I didn’t hit my Bucky Irving prop last week, but I’ll get back to him with another one here. While I liked Irving to find the end zone last week — and think he will this week, too — I’m taking him to have at least 60 rushing yards. Irving has had at least 60 rushing yards in three of the last five games, with two of those performances seeing him easily eclipse that mark. Irving now has a golden matchup with the Panthers.
Carolina is currently last in the NFL in yards per carry allowed to opposing running backs, last in stuff rate against opposing running backs, and 30th in rushing touchdowns allowed to running backs. There’s just not much stopping Irving from finding some gaps here. Also, if we get to see Baker Mayfield return, that would be even better. If the Panthers can’t load the box, it will be easier for Irving to leave.
Bet: Irving Over 59.5 Rushing Yards (-122 – 1.5 units) and Anytime TD (+110 – 0.5 units)
