Mike LaFleur: I know Carson Beck is ready to step in if needed

Cardinals rookie quarterback Carson Beck earned a promotion.

While Beck won’t start this week, the quarterback shuffle that came from Gardner Minshew’s performance in Sunday’s win over the Cowboys elevated Beck from No. 3 to No. 2 on the team’s depth chart.

Former starter Jacoby Brissett is now the No. 3 behind Beck, making him an obvious trade candidate.

How did Beck land his new role?

“Obviously just behind the scenes,” head coach Mike LaFleur said in his Monday press conference. “You don’t see it, but I know he’s ready to step in there if needed. Again, like Gardner, like anybody you could ask to be on this team, they’re ready like they’re going to be the starting quarterback, or they’re ready if they have to come in. I know he has [a] full knowledge of this game plan, [and] of this system.

“It’s no secret, obviously, if something were to happen, it’d be nice to know what we have right there. I feel really good about where he is with his development, so if that were to come up, then obviously he’s the next one.”

Beck had an impressive preseason debut in the Hall of Fame Game in August. But he suffered a rib injury in that game that sidelined him for the rest of that month’s exhibition contests. He also recently dealt with a back issue.

After Beck was selected in the third round of this year’s draft, it’s likely that his time to start for Arizona could be sooner rather than later — unless Minshew Mania leads the Cardinals on a long streak.
