Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh is in a tough spot. After the team lost its first six games, people looked to him for answers as to why things fell apart after making the playoffs each of the last two years. Unfortunately for the Chargers, he was stymied.
“We’re going to look at everything,” Harbaugh said via the team’s website. “The work that I do, it starts with me. The plan is to watch it and be with our offensive coaches.
“I see the effort, the work put in, in the meetings and on the practice field. To translate that onto the field is what it takes,” Harbaugh added. “I feel bad for our players, our team, our coaches, our fans. It needs to be addressed.”
Sometimes, this is what happens in the NFL: some plays go one way, a team doesn’t live up to its potential for a week, and a snowball effect ensues. That appears to be the case with the Chargers, who are one of two winless teams in the NFL entering Week 7.
With Harbaugh not really figuring out how to fix the issue, it’s clear he needs to educate himself.
This is not to say that Harbaugh is a bad coach. It just means he doesn’t know how to coach this group any more than he has the last two years. That’s why teaching changes are happening, and they’re coming at a bad time.
Whether the Chargers fire Harbaugh in the middle of the season or wait until the end of the year, it’s clear that a new voice is needed to get this team going in the right direction. Harbaugh has taken this team as far as it can go, and the closest way to climbing the ladder is to start from scratch.
