North Carolina State Wolfpack at Stanford Cardinal – Friday at 10:30 pm ET

This is an interesting one to me. For whatever reason, I’ve had Stanford a few times this year, and I’ve seen enough to know it’s not a bad football team. Some of Stanford’s numbers were undoubtedly skewed by blowout losses to Wake Forest and Notre Dame, but the Cardinal held their own well in games against teams at their level of competition. Well, this is like one of those games.

This season, NC State barely cracked the Top 75 in Net EPA/Play (0.04), and the team also happened to be ranked No. 124 in EPA/Play Allowed (0.21). This is a very bad football team, which makes it hard to understand why Stanford can’t keep things tight in a home game under the lights.

When Stanford plays against weak football teams, the Cardinal have the ability to pound the rock. Then, that opens things up for an underrated passing game.

The only thing really working in NC State’s favor here is the fact that the team is coming off a bye week. But Dave Doeren’s teams generally fall apart after the first month in the season, and I see it being tough for the road team. So, give me Stanford to keep it within a touchdown. I will also sprinkle the moneyline.

Bet: Stanford +7.5 (-135 – 1.5 units) and Stanford ML (+210 – 0.5 units)

Kansas State Wildcats at Arizona State Sun Devils – 3:45 pm ET

This season both teams are 4-2 in the Over. Kansas State actually sits at No. 29 in the nation in Net Adjusted EPA/Play (0.13), as Avery Johnson and his dual-threat skill set make the Wildcats hard to stop. So, in a meeting with a shaky Sun Devils defense, you can count on the road team putting up a ton of points.

Arizona State should look good in this one as well. I thought Kenny Dillingham did a good job bringing in Cutter Boley from Kentucky, but it didn’t work out. He now has 23-year-old Mikey Keene, who has started a ton of games in his career. Keene doesn’t offer long-term upside for this team, as this will be his final year in Tempe. However, he’s more than capable of executing a game plan and distributing the ball to his playmakers — and doing it at the right time.

I don’t think we’ll see much success from either defense in this game, and pundits seem to agree. Our betting splits pages show that smart bets drive this number.
