Eagles news: Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith both out of practice as injuries pile up

The Philadelphia Eagles continue to be hit with injuries, as stars Saquon Barkley and Devonta Smith missed Wednesday’s practice.

Heading into a key NFC East division matchup against the Washington Commanders, the Philadelphia Eagles will look to try to right the ship on Sunday. Losers of five in a row after a 2-0 start, the Eagles could use a win Sunday to get back on track. However, Philadelphia continues to have an array of injuries to contend with. According to the team’s account on X, formerly Twitter, six players did not practice on Wednesday. The group includes star running back Saquon Barkley and leading receiver DeVonta Smith.

“Wednesday’s Injury Report,” the team’s account posted Wednesday night.

In addition to Barkley and Smith missing practice, fellow receivers Dontayvion Wicks and Britain Covey missed the session, along with defensive backs Jihaad Campbell and Jonathan Jones. The Eagles had six players with limited participation, while seven others practiced without limitations. In addition to Wednesday’s list, Philadelphia has a few others on the shelf today. That includes starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is no longer guaranteed.

However, Sunday’s tilt against the Commanders is a key one. A loss to Washington would snap a six-game losing streak dating back to Week 2’s 24-20 win over the Tennessee Titans. The matchup is the second between the two rivals, as the Eagles defeated Washington 24-22 at home in Week 1. A win Sunday would at least keep Philadelphia within striking distance of the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys, the two teams currently ahead of them in the NFC East. However, a road loss would drop the Eagles to the bottom of the standings. If Barkley and Smith can’t go, the task of succeeding a depleted roster is even more daunting.
