Efton Chism III’s spectacular one-handed TD catch may have saved the Patriots’ season

Drake Maye has a really scary start to the 2026 season to follow up a breakout second season that nearly earned him league MVP. Maye and the New England Patriots desperately need a win against the Buffalo Bills in Week 4 to build some positive momentum and avoid a 1-3 start. Maye played his best game of the season, giving the Patriots a chance to win by connecting with wide receiver Efton Chism III for a clutch fourth quarter touchdown.

With the Bills leading by five points late in the fourth quarter, Maye rolled to his right and threw the ball into the end zone. Buffalo’s defensive back seemed to grab Chism in the air, but that didn’t stop him from extending his free arm to make an incredible one-handed catch for the lead. New England picked off Josh Allen on the next possession, and the Patriots got the win they were desperate for.

Chism is an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Washington in 2025 who has just five career catches entering this week. Chism entered the game with two catches for -1 yard on the season. A receiver with such a small footprint making arguably the best catch of the season, and one that delivered New England a victory at that, was a truly special moment.

Maye will get the credit for leading the Patriots to a bounce-back win against an elite team, but it wouldn’t have happened without Chism making this ridiculous and amazing play for his QB. The NFL never ceases to surprise us.
