The 49ers’ defensive line has strengthened despite major injuries, potentially shifting the focus at John Lynch’s trade deadline to a new offensive target.
The San Francisco 49ers seem to have found an unexpected solution to their defensive line woes. After losing their entire starting defensive front, the team appeared likely to pursue pass rushers before the trade deadline.
However, young players have changed those roles, potentially allowing general manager John Lynch to focus on other areas of need.
49ers writer David Lombardi discussed the turnaround on X, formerly of Twitter. He pointed out that the defensive line’s recent production has changed the team’s trade priorities. Instead of making the pass their primary target, San Francisco can now look to add help at wide receiver.
“Wild development considering the 49ers are down their entire starting D-line: It’s probably not even a top priority in the trade right now. That’s how big the young guys are surging,” wrote Lombardi. “WR comes out as the top trade priority. But it’s a narrative-shattering surge from the D-line.”

The 49ers’ defensive front delivered a dominant performance against Sam Darnold over the weekend, producing a pressure rate in the 97th percentile. Seven different players recorded multiple pressures, with Keion White and Gracen Halton leading the way. Halton also recorded a strip-and-score touchdown.
White’s versatility adds to his value. He helped San Francisco keep pressure on opposing quarterbacks despite losing its usual starters.
With the return of Nick Bosa, the 49ers could have another solid pass rusher to join a defensive front that has already begun to produce at a high level. All would help San Francisco trade its trade resources for a wide receiver.
